Who this is for

Veterans, first responders and family members preparing for a physician visit or already in the program. The Grateful Veteran does not tell anyone what dose, product or route to use. The physician does. This page helps you have that conversation.

Questions about safety

  • Could cannabis interact with any medication I take, including sleep aids, blood thinners, seizure or heart medications?
  • What side effects should I expect, and which ones mean I should call you or seek care?
  • Are there forms or products you would advise me to avoid given my history?
  • How should I store it safely away from children, pets and anyone else in the home?

Questions about daily life

  • How long after use is it unsafe to drive or operate equipment? (Driving impaired is illegal regardless of a card.)
  • What should I know about my employer's or agency's drug policy? Florida's program does not require employers to accommodate medical marijuana; first responders in particular should check department policy and any collective bargaining agreement before enrolling.
  • Is there anything I should tell my other doctors, my dentist or a surgeon before a procedure?

Questions about dependence and mental health

The VA notes that cannabis use disorder is real and treatable. Ask your physician:

  • What are the signs that use is becoming a problem, and what would we do about it?
  • Could cannabis affect my mood, sleep, anxiety or PTSD symptoms in ways I should watch for?
  • If I already work with a mental health provider, how should we coordinate?

Questions about the plan

  • How will we know whether this is helping? What are we tracking?
  • When do I recertify, and how do I reach you between visits?
  • If it is not helping, what are the other options we should consider?

Keep every provider in the loop

If you receive care through the VA, tell your VA provider. The VA encourages that conversation, and it becomes part of your confidential record so your care team can manage interactions and adjust your plan. Details: VA and Medical Marijuana: What Veterans Need to Know.
